The Master Bathroom in this house, built in 1967 by an architect for his own family, had adequate space and an existing skylight, but was rooted in the 1960s with it’s dark marbled laminate tops and dated cabinetry and tile. The clients and I worked closely together to update the space for their 21st century lifestyle, which meant updating the divided layout and removing an unnecessary bidet. This was a 1950's lake cabin that we transformed into a permanent residence. As a cabin, the original builder hadn't taken advantage of the beautiful lake view. This became the main focus of the design, along with the homeowners request to make it bright and airy. We created the vaulted ceiling and added many large windows and skylights.

Budget demanded keeping the whirlpool tub and existing plumbing locations while transforming the space to a serene environment in keeping with the house. All drawers are functional on the floating vanity not allowing the plumbing trap to take away storage space. Mirrors conceal storage and have contemporary styling and LED lighting. The undulating limestone backsplash adds textural interest with a minimal design. Sleek large-scale brick patterned flooring creates a more tranquil space than the previous black and white checkerboard environment. The clients desired a ‘his and her’ arrangement in this closet that required more organization. Faux wenge melamine doors, instead of wood veneer, met budget requirements. Lucite hardware up the style and frosted glass door panels lighten up the dark finishes and provide neatness and functionality by allowing an orderly way to glimpse what is hidden inside. In 2008 an extension was added to this small country home thus allowing the clients to redesign the main floor with a larger master suite, housing a separate vanity, and a bathroom filled with technology, elegance and luxury.Although the existing space was acceptable, it did not reflect the charismatic character of the clients, and lacked breathing space.By borrowing the ineffective space from their existing “entrance court” and removing all closets thus permitting for a private space to accommodate a large vanity with Jack and Jill sinks, a separate bathroom area housing a deep sculptural tub with air massage and hydrotherapy combination, set in a perfect symmetrical fashion to allow the beautiful views of the outdoor landscape, a thin 30” LCD TV, and incorporating a large niche wall for artful accessories and spa products, as well as a private entrance to the large well organized dressing room with a make-up counter. The homeowners felt their shower was too small, so it was a priority to expand it. The new shower features blue mosaic tile, oil rubbed bronze fixtures, a shower niche for storage and a bench with turquoise tile that matches the rest of the space and provides convenience. The pebble flooring contributes to the spa-like aesthetic of the bathroom.

“Adequate storage is always a priority in bathrooms,” commented Ann. “In this bathroom the large vanity provides ample storage, but there’s also ledges throughout for storage. There’s one on the vanity that does double duty as a shelf and creating architectural interest and one behind the tub for the homeowner to rest a glass or book on while bathing.”

Mirror shutters were designed for the Project. Both bathrooms were finished in micro cement, which gave us the desired look of seamless finish. Basins, bathtub and WCs in matt Astone material were ordered directly from Italy and stainless steel sanitary ware from CEA completed the look. The main feature of the family bathroom was bespoke mirror window shutters, which were sliding side ways, allowing a user to have a mirror in front of the basin, as well as revealing hidden bathroom storage when covering the windows.photos by Richard Chivers
The client wanted a bathroom that retained the original feel of the house, but at the same time reflected the more modern renovations throughout the rest of the house. The design plays with the juxtaposition of old and new – tiles by Patricia Urquiola which draw inspiration from traditional encaustic Victorian floor tiles, but with a 21st century spin, sit next to an antique style mirror and modern bathroom fittings. Adding pops of color is a favorite, retro trend in bathrooms and kitchens alike right now, and this contemporary bathroom remodel is a fantastic example. “The homeowners really wanted a vibrant space to reflect their personalities in this master bathroom,” says Normandy Designer Ann Stockard. “We went with turquoise tile mosaic accents throughout the space to create focal points and a sense of harmony. The quiet, neutral beige walls and warm cabinetry really sets off the turquoise, giving the homeowners the vibrant bathroom they desired.”

This project was the remodel of a master suite in San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood. The house is an Edwardian that had a story added by a developer. The master suite was done functional yet without any personal touches. The owners wanted to personalize all aspects of the master suite: bedroom, closets and bathroom for an enhanced experience of modern luxury. The bathroom was gutted and with an all new layout, a new shower, toilet and vanity were installed along with all new finishes. The design scope in the bedroom was re-facing the bedroom cabinets and drawers as well as installing custom floating nightstands made of toasted bamboo. The fireplace got a new gas burning insert and was wrapped in stone mosaic tile. The old closet was a cramped room which was removed and replaced with two-tone bamboo door closet cabinets. New lighting was installed throughout.General Contractor:Brad Doranhttp://www.dcdbuilding.com
